It is a water sport activity in which the anglers compete to catch the best target fish. This sport originated from recreational fishing, using baits, hooks, rods, and reels. However, since this form of sport is generally conducted in deep waters, a boat is also essential to sport fishing.

There are two major classifications for this sport :

  • Saltwater fishing with target fishes such as tuna, Chinook, and markin
  • Freshwater fishing with target fishes such as bass, catfish, salmon, and snook

It is also called recreational or game fishing, whose main intent is for recreational purposes, which provides a sense of excitement and adrenaline rush among fishermen. The methods used for this sport vary from the type of fish targeted to the location and the strategy of the angler.

They can also range from the traditional sport fishing methods from Great Britain to using high-tech systems and mechanisms to chase the best bluewater fish.

In the past, in North America, sport fishers generally brought fish, even if they were dead, to weigh them like trophies. However, in today’s time, a catch and release or a tag and release technique are used to protect the fish species. In this technique, the fish are generally tagged with their vitals recorded and reported to government agencies.

Most anglers use a fishing line with a fishing rod with a hook at the end of the line. Some form of bait is attached to the hook and is reeled into the water with an attached reel.

Fly fishing is one of the most common techniques involving a repetitive swing or whipping motion that delivers the ultimate fly effect to its target. Another unusual form of fishing is using a cross and bow.
